Title: Best And Worst Movies ... And Guilty Pleasures

surfcity - October 24, 2006 06:16 PM (GMT)
Here's my list. What's yours?

Worst:

1. Seven - with Brad Pitt and Gweneth Paltrow; at the end of this horrid POS movie we were sitting there in our seats somewhat stunned as a couple walked down the aisle past us saying, "Who thinks up this crap?" Our thoughts exactly. This one's at the top of our all-time worst list.
2. Walk like a man -with Howie Mandel; just plain bad. Can't believe we wasted our time and money on this. After this one, we never failed to look at reviews before going to a movie.

Best:

1. Sophie's Choice - Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Peter MacNichol; stunning (in a good way as compared to Seven), blew me away. Walked around for days afterward, stunned. Kevin Kline should have gotten the Oscar, too.
2. Rudy - who can watch this one and not be inspired?
3. Lorenzo's Oil - Wow. Intense, but worth it.
4. Castaway - Tom Hanks; the sense of loss (on different levels) is captured well in this movie. I watch it when I want a good cry. Yet, I like the hopeful ending.
5. Fearless - with Jeff Bridges; guess I have a thing for plane crash movies (although I haven't gotten up the wherewithall to watch United 93). The stages he works through in this movie are compelling.

Favorite guilty pleasures:

1. The In-Laws (the original) - with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin; "There's red tape in the bush?" Never get tired of popping this one in for a good laugh. '
2. What About Bob? - Bill Murray; ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha... i crack up just thinking about watching this one.
3. The Sandlot - they captured the feel of this era to a T. Love this movie for a fun, funny, nostalgic look at the 60s as a kid.
4. Breaking Away - loved Dennis Christopher's immersion into a whole different personna (and culture). Very funny. And Dennis Quaid shirtless is a bonus.
5. School of Rock - "Nice pipes, Tamika." Love Jack Black's explanation of the evolution of rock (on the blackboard). Very funny and entertaining from start to finish.

chattycb - October 24, 2006 06:53 PM (GMT)
Worst:
Too many to list.

Best:
Definitely agree with you about Sophie's Choice. I hadn't read the book and did not know what to expect. What a powerful, gut-wrenching movie.
Any movie with Streep is usually great.
many would probably put Schindler's List as a top movie,
although I haven't seen it. After seeing Sophie's Choice I vowed to stay
away from sad movies. I literally can't take it.

Guilty Pleasures:
1. When Harry Met Sally- with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. I just laugh every time I see it.

2. While You Were Sleeping-- with Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher.
I may have seen this movie as many as 50 times. It is vrey schmaltzy but it gets to me. There is a look that Bill Pullman gives to Sandra Bullock at the top of her staircase that is just to die for. I wonder if anyone loves this movie as much as I do.

3. Any musical with Gene Kelly in it.

surfcity - October 24, 2006 07:55 PM (GMT)
I love While You Were Sleeping, too. I loved Bill Pullman and the "leaning" scene. And his bedroom eyes at the end. Yikes! I melt every time. One of our other favorite scenes is toward the end when Sandra Bullock talks about how she fell in love with his family (something I can relate to), and when she points out which brother she's in love with saying, "Not that one...that one." Funny, sweet, romantic. A real winner.

Yeah, I know what you mean about sad movies. I think Sophie's Choice edges out, in my own mind, some of the other fine movies of that genre, perhaps because it speaks from a woman's point of view as opposed to Schindler's List or Life is Beautiful. And I saw it years before I became a mom.

Berkana - October 24, 2006 08:33 PM (GMT)
Well okay my favorites aren't necessarily the best. (Like most of the Marx Brothers films.)

So for

Best:

Eraserhead- Probably the number one surrealist film ever, the subtlety in this film is key. The industrialized soundtrack to a dark and demented film is key. The effects may be slightly dated, but the horrible cries of the fetus is a bit bone-chilling. However, what makes this movie work above everything else is Jack Nance who plays Henry in the film he never fails to capture my attention, there is something so sad, yet ethereal about the way he portrays the character. His gazes and eyes make the film what it is. It's also one of those films where it has a underlying, and horrifying message.

Psycho- This one goes for it's cinematography/camera angles, there is nothing more amazing then it's use of the camera, the scenes with Norman in the backroom should go down as the best use of the camera, ever, in any movie.

Requiem For A Dream- This one was sort of a sick and jumbled, but delicious mess. It's rough, and sick, but there's something about it that is bonechilling.

Worst-

I'm not sure...

Eyes Wide Shut- Man.... Kubrick was a genius, this film was just awful. It was like he was trying too do opposite of what he was famous for. (Realism, with black comedy- I.E. Clockwork Orange, and Dr. Strangelove.) This was just bad.

Twin Peaks- Yes his other film is on Best, but this was just a mess. This was almost a true definition of, you need to be on pot to watch to understand it. There was nothing artsy or inventive.

Hostel- Just an excuse for more gore.

Guilty Pleasures-

Rocky Horror Picture Show- Yes I am one of the groupies.

Shock Treatment-Yes the other Richard O'Brien film, yes... I am still a groupie.

I thought I was the only one!! I love While You Were Sleeping, I recognize that it's no earth-shattering insight to life, but I just can't help myself. I have literally rewound the "I'm in love with your son...not that one, that one" scene more times than I can count. Bill Pullman just has that deep sexy voice and those expressions that melt you. How is it that he hasn't played more lead love-interest parts? And you can't help but root for Sandra. I also love the interplay with the grandma and Saul--"Argentina has great beef. Beef and Nazis. John Wayne was tall. - Dustin Hoffman was five-six. -Would you want to see Dustin Hoffman save the Alamo?"

Best Movies for me:
Princess Bride
Dr. Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb)
Edward Scissorhands
Fargo
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
Adaptation
Life of Brian
American History X
Kiss Me Kate (hokey, I know)
Cabaret
Rear Window
Dark City
Big Lebowski
Barton Fink
so many more...

Worst that I've seen:
Nearly anything that has Kevin Costner (Bull Durham excepted due to Robbins and Sarandon)
Speed
Johnny Be Good
Fantastic Four (awful!)
Crow (hated it, I know I'm one of the few)
Grease 2
Bubble boy (not the Travolta one)

Guilty pleasures:
OK--this one I'm embarassed about...Desperately Seeking Susan (I'll never buy it, but when it's on I watch it--all about Aiden Quinn and Rosanna for me--Madonna may as well not be in it)
nearly all John Hughes movie--my high school era
'B'Horror movies--Basketcase, Microwave Massacre, Blood-sucking Pharoahs in Pittsburgh and the Evil Dead movies

chattycb - October 25, 2006 09:11 PM (GMT)
Berk,

All I can say is that you are wonderfully articulate for one so young.
I have a son a few yrs. older than you and he raved about
Requiem for a Dream also. I actually bought the DVD for him as a
gift but have never seen it. Subject matter not to my liking, I guess.

So happy that there are a few of us that love While You Were Sleeping.
How about the wedding scene where Bullock tells the family "I fell
in love with you." And Peter Boyle gives her an incredulous look and says
"You fell in love with me?" Too funny.

ElliottCat101 - October 25, 2006 11:54 PM (GMT)
War of the Worlds has got to be the worst movie I've ever seen. It had so much potential to be awesome, but then it turned around and went in the complete opposite direction of awesome.

OMG... I'm also a big lover of While You Were Sleeping!!! Good lord I've seen that movie a bazillion times! I love the part where the guy just wakes up and she's standing there with that so nervous smile on her face. Such a sweet movie. LOVES IT!

A few of my Favs... these are just movies that I could (and have) watched over and over and over again.

LOTR- Yes I'm a total nerd and I totally love all 3 of them!
Big Trouble in Little China- has been one of my favs for a long time
V for Vendetta- If you haven't seen it.. You must!
Matrix (all of them)- Yes.. I even love the 2nd and 3rd ones.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding- Windex cures it all baby!
X-men 2, 3- First one I didn't like too much
Waiting- It's so disgustingly funny.. LOVES IT!
Grandma's Boy- As you can tell.. I'm not much of a mature movies sorta gal heh.
Fight Club- One of the best movies
Queen of the Damned- I loved it so much it was the first movie soundtrack I've ever bought.
Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness- What kind of nerd would I be if I didn't love these?
Dune- It's so trippy but so cool.
Shaun of the Dead- My new favorite movie of all time.
The Truman Show- One of Jim Carrey's best pictures IMO.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- You can't go wrong with Depp and Burton duo. You just can't.
40 year old Virgin- SO funny and raunchy. I love it!

And alot of other movies that I can't think of atm...

Worst... Can't think of many b/c I sorta block them out....

Undead- Think it's an Australian movie. It was just one of the worst pieces of movie crap I've ever seen.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the orginal one)- I know alot of people say it's a classic. But that doesn't make it good. The movie is annoying with annoying chars that you can't wait to see die so they'll just shut the heck up.
House of 1000 Corpses- Don't even get me started
Alexander- Good god this is the movie that didn't want to end. SO boring.. if I had to see another scene where the guys are sitting around eating I was going to throw my dvd player out the window.
Scary Movie 3, 4- I think the Wayans Brothers are funny as heck. But when Scary movie moved to the hands of the Naked Gun folks... they turned into crap.
Date Movie- I didn't laugh once during the entire thing. I seriously didn't even crack a smile throughout it.

And I'm sure if I thought more.. I could think of more movies that I'd rather forget I ever saw heh... but this list will do for now :D

CathleenSusan - November 8, 2006 06:55 AM (GMT)
Ok, my best list is super long, so I might post that later. What I want to say is that the absolute WORST movie I have seen in the past year is "The Brothers Grimm". It was horrid! I almost always watch a movie all the way through, even if it is boring/bad, but as soon as the kitten was thrown into the blades I switched it off and marched down to the local used cd/dvd store and sold it for $2.00. Ugh.

And the Interpreter was painfully boring. ZZZZZ

I just have a question. The way I understand it, a "guilty pleasure" movie is one that you secretly enjoy watching, but that you wouldn't want to actually ADMIT to liking. But in looking through the lists that everybody else has created, I have seen a few movies on the "Guilty Pleasures" list that I absolutely LOVE and that I have never been embarassed to admit that I love. Is it more of a personal thing than anything? Maybe my "Guilty Pleasures" list would include movies that other people wouldn't have a problem admitting that they like. I'll make a list when I've clarified everything in my mind. Yes, I tend to overthink everything!

That's a good way of interpreting a guilty pleasure, I guess.
But in my mind it's just a movie that is a little wisp of a thing--
frothy, with not much substance. One that wouldn't be an Oscar
contender. Just my interpretation.

I share your confusion and interpretation of a guilty pleasure. For instance, I would never call Caddyshack a guilty pleasure. I know it's not an Oscar contender (cause the Oscar people hate comedies), but I think it's widely recognized as a GREAT comedy. Desperately Seeking Susan--that's a guilty pleasure, because who in their right mind would admit to that (outside of anonymity, or maybe even then :P ).

On the favorite movie note--I think I need to add one. I finally saw It Happened One Night last night and I loved it. I now have such a crush on Clark Gable, circa 1930s. I've always heard about that movie, and now I see why.

ThankYouElliott - November 9, 2006 05:36 PM (GMT)

I was just confused, because I LOVE "The Muppets Take Mahnattan" and "When Harry Met Sally", and I didn't understand why they would be considered "guilty pleasures". :D

Those are both great movies. Again, I think When Harry Met Sally... is recognized as one of the top movies in the romantic comedy genre, both critically and by popularity. Same deal with most of the Muppet Movies--the first one is my favorite, but I'd have to put Muppets Take Manhattan second, then The Great Muppet Caper, then the Christmas Carol--and that's all I've seen. Of course, this is all from a person who has the Muppet Show theme song as her ringtone :D .

“Can you help me? I have lost my sense of direction."
"Have you tried Hare Krishna?"

“Well, how do you like the film?"
“I've seen detergents that leave a better film than this." - Statler and Waldorf

"Life's like a movie, write your own ending, keep believing, keep pretending."

Sister Act 2!! That is probably one of my top Guilty Pleasures of all time! I tear-up everytime Lauren Hill opens her mouth to sing! I love this movie. I even bought the soundtract.

That is why I was so disappointed with Lauren Hill's debut solo album. I was hoping she would sing songs that demonstrated her amazing vocal talent, but instead it was more hip-hop and rap infused. There was nothing on the album that reminded me of that young girl in sister act 2.

Well, I love the Muppet Movies, and they are something I grew up with. I love all of the Muppets and Seseme Street characters. I put them on my guilty pleasures list, because a lot of people I know just don't get it. They tend to think that Muppets are just for kids, which they're not. That's why I put them on my guilty pleasures list. So, I guess it sometimes depends on who your peers are. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Muppets. :)

That's awesome! I adore all of the Muppets. Another Jim Henson project I love is Emmitt Otter's Jugband Christmas. I have it on dvd. Oh, and I love Christmas Eve on Seseme Street! I'm such a big kid. I love the Ernie and Bert part the best, where they have to pawn in their treasured items (Rubber Duckie and Paper Clip Collection) to get each other Christmas presents. Oh, it's so sweet. :P Muppets rule.

Am I the only one that likes "Adventures In Babysitting"? If that's a "guilty pleasure", then my whole family is guilty! I can't even remember the last time my family was together at a Holiday gathering where somebody didn't insist on watching it? "Nobody leaves this place without singing the blues!" "That's not a kitten, kid. That's a jumbo-sized Sewer Rat!" And so on and so forth. Maybe it's just me...

I actually really like that movie--but, I think it may just qualify as a guilty pleasure.

I was very excited when I learned that Mark Cohen in Rent was Daryl from Adventures in Babysitting!

So, I guess the guilty pleasure thing is in the eye of the beholder (and the beholder's peers, as someone said above).

So, here's one that I think has to qualify as a guilty pleasure--Weird Science. I can't help liking that one though, it was part of my high school experience, and was constantly quoted (still is some).

"Clue" has a great cast, that's for sure. What about Mel Brooks movies? Blazing Saddles, History of the World--are they guilty pleasures? Either way, I'm a fan. Producers is the best one, IMO, and I don't even feel a little guilty about that one.

Yeah, I'm way too old to watch animated movies, too, but there are a few that are guilty pleasures. Rescuers Down Under has great animation and George C. Scott as the bad guy is a hoot. I'm embarrassed to admit I cried during the ballroom scene in Beauty and Beast. I'm sitting there thinking, I'm crying over a cartoon! I thought Pocahontas was really well done and I like the new version that came out with Mel Gibson singing the love song (in the teepee) that they cut in the earlier version.

I still don't think that anybody is EVER too old for Disney movies!
