Title: Fashion Industry And Anorexia
parsimmon - November 17, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
I just read that a supermodel from Brazil died from infections due to Anorexia. Ana Carolina Reston only weighed 88 lbs, and had been keeping her
weight down with a tomato and apple diet.
In the same story..I read that in the U.S., Banana Republic and Nicole Miller will introduce "sub-zero" sized fashions for women this fall, taking skinny sizes to a new low.
What do you think about this? I think it's irresponsible and even cruel. Now the pressure to be a size 0 will become pressure to be a sub-zero. What the heck is going on?

Well, I had read awhile ago that the average size for American women was a 14.
So, I can't even begin to imagine what a sub-zero size would be.
I caught a lot of flak in another thread on this topic.
Someone had posted a beautiful photo of Katherine and said she had too much "junk in the trunk". I responded that I thought she looked just fine and her butt didn't look too big to me. I think America has lost touch with what is a normal body size.
I thought Kat looked fine before she even lost the weight on AI/
I KNOW I am in the minority but to me, even size 0 is skin and bones.

Parsimmon, it's getting worse instead of better. I read that article about the Brazilian girl this morning; very sad.

Well this is awkward. I posted the "junk in the trunk" comment, and unfortunately you took it out of context yet again. Remember me? The self-admitted pear? I guess it's convenient to further your point by leaving out the rest of my comment that having too much booty in one's pants is not a bad thing. So please stop using my comment to try to exemplify your point about society pressuring women to be thin. I would never support such an absurd notion.

I don't think Katherine looked fat at all. She has a great figure. The only thing I didn't like about that particular dress in the picture was the way it fit across her bum. It was a satin-like fabric that catches the light, so if there are any figure flaws, it will makes them more obvious. Even a person with near perfect figure looks better with a good undergarment.
As for the zero and sub-zero sizes, unless a person is small-boned and naturally thin, I don't know why anyone would want to look that small.

Wow,
Now who's being touchy. I got a lot of flak for stating my opinion and you even offered to help me get off my soapbox.
What I still believe and stated before is that it is all in one's own perception.
I don't think she has a big butt--plain and simple.
I reiterated that how many times.
People will see what they want to see. I know you said that a little booty in the trunk is not a bad thing.
What I said and still stand by my remarks, is that it is all in the perception.
I don't think her butt looks big. What may be big to you, is not to me.
That's all. I don't think any of us women support women and young ladies starving themselves to be an unrealistic size.
Friends? :grouphug:

VERY SAD SITUATION! I PERSONALLY DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO WOULD BE A SUB-ZERO SIZE. SO WHO EXACTLY ARE THEY MARKETING THIS SIZE TO? I WOULD THINK TO BE THAT SIZE, YOU WOULD BE ANOREXIC JUST LIKE THE GIRLS WHO WILL BE MODELING THEM.

I read about this a few days ago while i was at work.. I googled her and wound up on a message board for vogue magazine... and wow.. what a bunch of shallow woohas they are. It was really shocking actually. I didn't even realize that people like that still existed.
saying things like..
"she's not even that skinny" and "look at her cellulite"
It's disgusting. I couldn't believe that there were actually conversations like that going on. A few people came on and said "it's reasons like this that I hate this message board sometimes" but then they were still posting there right? All of this garbage... its a perpetual cycle. Oh well..
So so sad though.

I have to say that I've always been "glad" (kind of a weird term to use here, but what the hell) to see cellulite on thinner women .... it makes me feel better about the dimples on mah hump

Now I know why I can never fit into anything from Banana Republic!!
Apparently I'm not supposed to have any curves or eat more than one meal a day!
If I had ever purchased anything from BR I would boycott them. Now, I have purchased Nicole Miller fashions before, and out of respect for promoting a healthy self-image for all women, I will refrain from spending money on any Nicole Miller product until they get rid of sub-zero clothing.

Supermodel? 88 pounds? That is disgusting, who on earth is telling these girls they have to be this skinny???
I hate having the anorexic models on the runways, first of all they look gross (and resemble Keith Richards to a certain extent) but also because hello! Real women to NOT look like that!

what a perverse world we live in!!!
Thousands of mother would love to be able to feed their baby daughters, yet they die in their arms due to starvation.
Modeling and the Fashion Industry stink!!!
Bring on Catharine Zeta Jones, now that's a real woman!!!
