Title: Holiday Request
Description: Helping those less fortuante

sheila1221 - November 28, 2006 05:30 AM (GMT)
Seasons Greetings to all of my E-Train friends!!

As I sit here with a belly full of Thanksgiving leftovers, I am thinking about my many blessings and how fortunate I am to have many things and opportunites that others do not.

I am blessed with a steady job, a nice warm home, plenty of food, and decent clothes to wear. These are things that most of us take for granted, but many people struggle to obtain.

During this holiday season, I urge those of you who are able to give to those less fortunate. There are many small ways to help those in need. If we all give even just a little, it adds up to something big! Below are some ideas of ways to help:

*Toys for Tots donations
*Donations to the Salvation Army bell ringers
*Organize a food drive at work, church or school for local food bank - or drop off some food on your own!
*Adopt a family at work, church or school or on your own
*Many stores have an "Adoption Tree" where you can select a child to purchase a gift for
*Serve the holiday lunch/dinner at a local homeless shelter
*Contact a local charity about paying a utility bill for a needy family
*"Randon Acts of Kindness" towards people that you see are in need.

These are just a few ideas. Together, we can make a difference to those who could really use a hand.

If you have other suggestions - please post them! The more the merrier!

Bless you and Happy Holidays!!

Sheila

PS - please forgive my fat fingered spelling error in the title!

Great thread!!!

One of my favorite charities is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay. They search for cures, too.

You can donate money or you can purchase items from their online store, where proceeds go to the St. Jude Research Hospital. They have some really cute gifts that would be perfect presents for the holidays. I've ordered from them, and they have great quality merchandise. Some of the items are even designed by the children who are patients at St. Jude.
Here's the link to their website http://www.stjude.com

Year-round there are many charities that I contribute to. Many of them center around children. Of course most of my
contributions are modest, but every little bit helps, right?
At Christmas I usually donate to Toys for Tots and my church's Giving Tree.
One suggestion that I'd like to make is
the "Make A Wish" Foundation. My family was a recipient of a trip back in 2001 an
was the only bright spot in a horrible year.
I am truly thankful for my son's remission
and it is a very worthwhile charity for
very ill children.

I just became friends with a woman who belongs to the church of the latter day saints. 100 percent of their funds go to people in need all over the world.

They buy supplies needed and have missionaries all over the world. They don't preach religion, they just provide love and care! they rock!

I love Doctor Without Borders as well. They are my real idols and heros.

Also, I go to the dollar store each month, and buy 20 toothbrushes and drop them off the homeless shelter.
