Title: Yahoo Bomb Elliott This Thursday!
Description: Spread the Elliott buzz . . .
alienhamster - February 27, 2007 08:51 AM (GMT)
Okay, everybody . . .
Elliott is debuting his new single "Wait for You" on the radio this Thursday, and we need everyone's help in generating as much buzz as possible. One simple way to help him out is to
Yahoo bomb his name
THIS THURSDAY.
How does this work? Follow these easy steps:
(1) On Thursday, go to
http://www.yahoo.com and enter "Elliott Yamin" into the search engine. Spell the name correctly. :)
(2) Make sure that you
CLICK on one of the websites that pops up after you enter the search.
(3) Repeat this search occasionally throughout the day,
on as many different computers and internet access points as possible. Use cell phones and PDAs as well as different computers.
(4) Aim for
one search per hour per machine, on average. We don't want yahoo to throw out search totals because of "power searching."
(5) Kindly ask friends and co-workers to throw out an "Elliott Yamin" yahoo search or two on Thursday.
The goal is to help him make the yahoo buzz list of "Top Movers":
http://buzz.yahoo.com/If we're really savvy and dedicated, we can get his name to appear in the top searches of the day. To maximize his ranking, we need
as many different users as possible to search for his name on Thursday. We also need a high number of searches and clicks on the websites that appear after each search. If you have access to multiple computers (and thus multiple IP addresses), please do searches from each of them.
The results will be posted to Yahoo two days later (i.e., this Saturday).
If we can pull this off, our efforts will put Elliott's name up there into the upper echelon of buzzworthy musicians and pop culture figures. We can do it, but we'll need everyone's commitment.
Please sign up in this thread if you can help out, or if you have any further suggestions. We also need help spreading the word that this effort is underway for this Thursday.
Peace, and let's get ready to search!

I don't know, Alien, I think any different wording will ruin the "Elliott Yamin" searching; i.e., I think it should be "Elliott Yamin" and nothing BUT "Elliott Yamin" for anything to be counted.
Does anyone know more about this please? If not, I'm almost certain of this, and I wouldn't recommend putting up anything other than the name.
Another thing, Alien...didn't someone say the Yahoo people catch seacrchers who are doing multiples from the same IP address and disqualify the searches? I think the goal is to get as many different COMPUTERS searching just ONCE.
So, in my opinion, til somebody proves me wrong,
Everybody...Don't forget to
ask ALL your friends around the WORLD to search ELLIOTT YAMIN just once from Yahoo on Thursday, and to go into one of the sites!

Well, I was thinking it might be good to pair it with the name of the single. It's hard to know how they derive the search results. I'll change the top post in case you're right.
As for the search question: we don't know what their algorithm is. My advice is to search multiple times for this first attempt and see how we do.
sherwood - February 27, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
I definitely remember reading...maybe it was Ohioguy or some other person from here 'in the know 'who wrote it...that Yahoo recognizes blitzes from repeated IP addresses and they're not counted. Hello, whoever you are who wrote that, could you please come back and repeat?
You might be right about any combination of words with Elliott Yamin inside getting in on the searches.
ETA but why take the chance?

Well I just found this:
http://buzz.yahoo.com/overall/what's the buzz?
A subject's buzz score is the
percentage of Yahoo! users searching for that subject on a given day, multiplied by a constant to make the number easier to read. Weekly leaders are the subjects with the greatest average buzz score for a given week.

Where do you get the data for the Buzz Index?
The data is collected from Yahoo! search log files. The Yahoo! Buzz Index counts the total number of people searching for specific subjects. Individual users and their searches remain completely anonymous.
What is a buzz mover?
Buzz movers are the subjects with the greatest percentage increase in buzz score from one day to the next.
Significant increases in buzz score do not necessarily indicate huge overall interest in a subject. Greatest overall buzz is reflected by the list of buzz leaders.
For example, a subject that increases its buzz score from 4.0 to 12.0 would have a one-day buzz move of 200%, which might qualify it for inclusion on the list of buzz movers. However, that same subject, with a buzz of 12.0, might not make that day's list of buzz leaders.
What is a buzz leader?
Buzz leaders are the subjects with the greatest buzz score on a given day. These subjects are the most searched subjects on Yahoo! for that day.
What do the numbers mean?
A subject's buzz score is the percentage of users searching for that subject on a given day, multiplied by a constant to make the number easier to read.
More precisely, each point is equal to 0.001% of users searching on Yahoo! on a given day. For example, a buzz score of 500 for "Pokemon" translates to 0.5% of all users searching on Yahoo!
For buzz movers, the number displayed is the percentage increase in the subject's buzz score from the previous day.
Is anything filtered out?
Company names (such as Yahoo!), utilities and formats (email, MP3), and general terms (movies, downloads, football) are filtered out by the editors of the Yahoo! Buzz Index. The editors' goal is to list subjects that are interesting to the broadest possible audience. To this end, terms related to adults-only content are also excluded.
In some cases, the editors may also exclude terms that they believe have been elevated by similarity to unrelated popular terms. For example, the movie The Rock might be excluded if the buzz was determined to be solely generated by interest in the WWF star, The Rock.
How often is the site updated?
The Yahoo! Buzz Index is published Tuesday through Saturday. All the rankings on the Yahoo! Buzz Index -- both movers and leaders -- are updated each weekday and reflect the traffic from two days earlier. For example, Wednesday's Buzz Index reflects Monday's searches and clicks. (Twenty-four hours are required to process data and verify results.)
What does "Days on Chart" mean?
"Days on Chart" refers to the number of days a term has been one of the top 50 terms in a Buzz Leader category (overall, movies, television, music, sports). Note that we use the top 50 terms to track longevity, rather than just the top 20 that are displayed on the site. Days are calculated from January 1, 2001.
What do the arrows on Buzz Leaders mean?
The arrows reflect changes in rank for buzz terms. Green arrows indicate a move up in the rankings, while red arrows indicate a move down. The arrows don't reflect the direction or amount of change in a term's overall buzz score.
What does the "Move" column on Buzz Leaders mean?
The move number reflects the change in a term's buzz score. Positive move numbers are green and negative move numbers are red. While these numbers can sometimes indicate a trend in the popularity of a buzz term, they are also affected by the overall traffic patterns of users on a particular day. (For example, searches on Sunday differ greatly in character and variety from those made on Mondays.)
What does "Prev. Rank" mean?
"Prev. Rank" shows where a current buzz term was ranked in the previous day's buzz index. The number may be anywhere from 1 to 50, or, if a term is new to the buzz, it will be indicated with a dash.
What does "Breakout!" mean?
When a term goes from very few searches to a large number of searches, we refer to it as a Breakout!. Most movers have been searched for previously, which means the increase in searches on the term can be expressed in a percentage. Breakout! terms have a huge percentage increase because of the small number of searches from the previous day. Breakout! terms head straight to the top of the list of movers.

It's assumed that Yahoo will discount an overabundance of searches made from the same computer. That is, searching for "Elliott Yamin" over and over , minute by minute is going to yield zero benefit; however, searching randomly throughout the day - say every 1/2 hour or hour while you're on the net - might be ok.
*If you have more than one computer in the home, rotate your searches between them.
*If you have broadband access, your carrier now most likely REFRESHES and ASSIGNS a NEW IP every hour, as a security measure; thus multiple multi-hour searches WILL appear from different IP addresses.
*Remember you can search Yahoo from many cell phones and PDAs.
*You MUST click on a search result for it to count, I believe.
*I agree with Sherwood and others: use ONLY the CORRECT SPELLING.

Many people just check in at Etrain briefly for new news. Many do not search all the threads or even look at all of the pinned threads.
I think for the widest participation in this blitz a banner should be across the top of the page.
Rutti - February 27, 2007 01:40 PM (GMT)
Wow - I work at two different offices each day. One office has 5 computers and the other has nine. That's a lotta searchin with different IP's.
itslate - February 27, 2007 03:05 PM (GMT)
Most multi computer households use a router for internet connection. You will get only one IP. I'm not sure about work computers though. Depends on the set up.
itslate - February 27, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
I think we need to spread the word throughout the Elliott fan clubs on the web. So if someone wants to post this blitz on another board, I think they should note it, so it's not repeated.
Maybe someone should make a form letter :) to post. I'm not too good at that myself.

I am definetley on board! I plan to be right here, serving my duty as "Elliott Yamin search expert" this Thursday, and I hope everyone that is able, can do their part!! Let's help get the word out, and watch those presale numbers rise again!!!

I have Yahoo homepage and every time I go online I always put in "Elliott Yamin" to search. I've been doing this since first seeing Elliott on AI. This is several times a day....every day.

Bingo and I believe the lease on IPs expire every 24 hours but of course that depends on where you are in the lease which depends on the provider. In other words, you can't force an IP change.

Okay, so I'll integrate Ohioguy's points into the top post.
Can some of you spread the word to other websites and groups? ASAP pretty please? :)
kagey: can you take charge of the banner idea? I'm trying to get this thread pinned, but I'm not sure the mods have seen my request yet.
Thanks for the advice, y'all. Let's do this thang!
kagey - February 27, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
I pm'd CathleenSusan and asked for help with the banner. Hopefully she can do it or direct me to someone that can.
lindagt - February 27, 2007 07:55 PM (GMT)
I just posted a myspace bulletin to my friends - others can do that as well.
alienhamster - February 27, 2007 08:04 PM (GMT)
Thanks for spreading the word, guys. Feel free to copy parts of the top post as a short "instruction manual" for Thursday.
We're gonna need all E-trainers and Etrainer friends, co-workers, and family to help us out on this one!
Remember: the goal isn't obsessive powersearching by a few people, but as many individual searches from different people as possible.

Is it possible to format a letter from the info in the top post of this thread? It would be great if we could get this posted to other groups.
Is there a spot in the I-squad pages you could make this known?
alienhamster - February 27, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
The banner looks great!
Can those of you spreading the word to other sites let us know in this thread where else you've posted to? We want to make sure to cover all the major bases . . .

Oh, wait! Thursday is March 1. Can someone change than on the banner?
nanassetta - February 27, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
I sent an e-mail to Elliott_Yamin@yahoogroups.com. They have already pledged their support. Added a bulletin to my myspace. My son is going to get his friends to blitz too.

BTW, love the bomb icon. I wish we had a little bomb emoticon, too.
