Title: Wow, There's Some Really Bad Music
Description: on pop stations
lex - March 16, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
I haven't listened to pop stations much. Now I see why. I want to hear Elliott on the radio, so I've been streaming KIIS. It's painful. I was never really a Gwen Stefani fan, but WTH--she used to be better than this Sweet Escape song. And I remember the Black-eyed Peas used to be good (pre-Fergie, I think). I don't know how long I can suffer through, they need to play Elliott soon--or maybe I'll just go back to my iTunes. Back in my day (haha), pop wasn't quite this bad--don't get me wrong, it was bad, but now I think I'd be happy to hear some General Public, Madonna, ABC, Erasure, A-Ha, Duran Duran (alright I still listen to my old Duran Duran). And I hate too seem like a prude, but music was never this deeply misogynistic--how is everybody okay with that?
Sorry, had to vent.

Evidence of a declining culture, Lex. Declining in morals, education...you name it, we're going down in flames! We discussed this back in the MVS thread a long time ago (back in '06, maybe mid year). You're not alone..and I'm 25 yrs old! There are still a few of us young folks with standards though. LOL!

good to hear! The way I regard this music makes me feel ancient at 33!
So, wait, why is MIMS hot? cause he's fly and I'm not --whole song, that's it.
The best thing about this song is the 2pac sample (california) and the sample from the song in the movie Jarhead.--otherwise, complete crap!
realitymom - March 16, 2007 08:24 PM (GMT)
I was just talkin about this in chat last night! I also, do not typically listen to the radio as I am listening to itunes or my homemade E CD. After streamin KIIS last night... good grief. I, personally, enjoy Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape', but some of the other crap I heard...oh my. A song called 'Yummy', another about "Smack That", one that blatantly copies the melody from 'True' & yet another that has the main melody from a Dr.Dre (song dated in the early 90's.) Once I finally heard Elliott sing WFY, it was like balm for my bleeding ears. Where is the actual vocal talent nowadays?
Moody's lovechild - March 18, 2007 12:12 AM (GMT)
Top fourty music has always been painful for me. I can tolerate maybe five percent of what is played. Its always been that way. I won't wait to hear E on the radio, I will buy the cd and then I won't need to listen to all the rest I can mix him up with the blues and jazz I normally have on the ready.
estrayastar - March 18, 2007 01:00 AM (GMT)
meh, well yes there is
i really don't listen to the top 40 radio station here anymore because all they play are the same songs over and over and most of them lack substance. i mean, i will admit i do like some of the music (like sweet escape for example) the only reason ive been listening is to hear WFY and i've literally heard 3 justin timberlake songs in 30 minutes O.O it's painful. i'm 14 right now and i usually tend to listen to stuff thats about 10 or 20 years old, some stuff from when my mom was my age. so i guess that makes me a dork =P
but i dont even want to imagine what my kids will be listening to....
brwneydgirl - March 20, 2007 05:27 AM (GMT)
I agree, except that I do really like "Sweet Escape." For the most part, though, I prefer No Doubt over the solo Gwen. I hardly ever listen to the radio anymore, because I just don't think that the majority of popular music is any good. I'm not a JT fan, and I think he is overplayed. I like "Candyman" by Christina A, and she gets quite a bit of airplay. I appreciate that, because I think she is an excellent singer and artist. Oh, and Fergie should have stayed with the Peas. They were good. They were refreshing and different, and now she is just boring and odd as a solo singer. She needs to get her Peas back.
ElliottisTrueBlue - March 24, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
I totally agree! I don't mind the Sweet Escape (reminds me of "True Blue" by Madonna and is still just a fun song) but in most cases I ABHOR Top 40, Pretty much why with a few exceptions (Elliott being one) the only stuff you will hear me listen to is Christian music and oldies. Just most stuff today is....UGH.
I remember that imthesame sent me a message saying that I am 16 going on 40. I know it was a compliment meaning that I am mature (I try to act that way...most of the time) but its true. I have the same reaction as the 'rents to most stuff on the radio. My dad and I were skating along Clearwater Beach today and started cracking up at this dude blasting rap music

Okay, I'm a prude. I admit it. I love the new video and song by Christine Aguilar...but the lyrics upset me. First, the title..Candyman..is an attraction to young kids as it is..I'm talking 5 year olds.
Second, it has a great hook. I don't want to hear my 5 year old granddaughter going around singing...He's a one stop shop, makes the panties drop
He's a one stop shop, make my cherry pop.
I recall hearing my own 5 year old singing "Im a material girl, in a material world, and not liking it very much."
These lyrics are much to catchy for a child.
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/christinaag...a/candyman.html OKay, flame me. :) I'm old fashioned. I know it.
sherwood - March 24, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't even call today's stuff music.

Yeah that is my ONE problem with Christina. Her voice is amazing, lots of her other songs are great but some.....well....gross. Pity, the song itself and her voice are fantastic but the lyrics are a turn-off.
You are not a prude parsimmon, I'm 16 and feel the same way

I think it's fantastic that you're not sold on some of the tasteless music that is out there today. A friend of my son's who is 15 yrs. old is just like you in that she appreciates the music from quite a few years back .... when music was so much better than it is today. She hates the rap that is out today.
I will never understand top 40. I've been forcing myself to listen to a local radio station that I've requested to play Wait for You, and it is painful and annoying to listen to a lot of these songs.

This thread is interesting and I agree with most of what has been said. I have no problem with people who are connected with their sexuality and express it. However, if that is the ONLY message/idea that your music about, then it's a different story. I think there needs to be a balance between the fun/dance songs and the deep/moving ballads which usually have a lot of meaning and a story about the artist.

Some people think I just hate ALL rap in general-not true. I just hate the stuff on tired, repetitive beats with no melody in the background and with insipid dreck for lyrics like "This is Why I'm Hot". Popular rap has almost completely ruined the genre for me....

Rubbish that's a good word :rotfl:
Oh I really wish E could make it big but somehow I feel as if he won't fit in the majority. In other words, he's not crappy like most artists on mainstream radio!
elliottfan78 - March 30, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
I prefer to listen to AC than Top 40. At least they play a lot of good stuff from the 70s, 80s, and 90s like Elton John, The Eagles, Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, Vanessa Williams, Whitney Houston. I also used to listen to an oldies station but it switched to country recently.

Country is great too....(with a few exception's though, like "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" :rotfl: )
wowhesgood - April 1, 2007 07:07 PM (GMT)
LOL, I'm with ya here. I'd been listening to KIIS-FM and Sirius Hits1 to hear top 40 stuff and for all but a couple of songs the rest really hurt, hurt, hurt my ears and the few good songs are played so constantly that they began to hurt. Now, why if they'll play the crap they do, won't they play Elliott?
Reviewers speak of the simplicity of his lyrics, say what? At least they (for the very most part) speak of love, not sex. Country music typically tells a good story and for the most part the lyrics are simple but I can relate to many of the songs, just like I relate to what Elliott sings.
I really don't understand the attraction of JT, to me (ok, part of it is that I'm old but I can still recognize a good-looking guy, lol) he just isn't good looking at all.
For the most part I'm not sure the music of the late 60's and 70's can be topped. I also like a lot of the adult album rock out today.
Joining the prudish as well.
elliottfan78 - April 7, 2007 04:51 AM (GMT)
Some hope for pop music: Kelly Sweet. I heard her single, Raincoat, on Delilah's show one night. I checked out the samples of her album on iTunes. She has a very beautiful, soothing voice. Musically, her album is like Sarah McLachlan, Norah Jones, Celine Dion, the classical crossover stuff of Josh Groban.

I don't listen to the radio either. The "music" they play is absolutely dreadful.

For Elliott, I have been listening to local top 40, streaming stations all over the country and listening to Djs make moronic jokes about nonense. Elliott's single is beautiful and his voice is better than all of this crap.
I am feeling overloaded on top 40 music, and caught myself singing that horrible Fergie song "Glamerous" one day in the car. My fourteen yr old son was appalled! soon I will need an intervention from the E train :rotfl:

Wow they actually have one where you are Terri? Where is that for me?
I love R&B, but sadly most of it is 90s and before because for some reason it has been shoved aside for pop junk.

I actually think a lot of good music is coming from the U.K. recently. Mika, Paolo Nutini, The Scissor Sisters, and Amy Winehouse. (Granted Amy has some not-so-good lyrics, and definitely is not a role model.)
And they aren't really getting any radioplay at all. I find them all amazing. I just wonder why it is that we won't let them become huge here (Like they should), but we let crap like This is Why I'm Hot, become big here.
Paolo is like a saving grace really. He's still very young and needs to work on his stage presence sometimes. But he's got an amazing voice, he's as hot as all get out, and he's one of the most genuinely sweet people ever. (At least that's what I've heard from friends who've seen him overseas in concert and got to meet him.)
Mika has a Freddy Mercury inspired sound, but with a little bit more modern sounds. The Scissor Sister are hilarious, and sort of remind me of Jimmy Fallon singing, but they are million times better then any other crap playing here.
elliottroxmysox - June 26, 2007 05:08 PM (GMT)
I have to agree with most of your points...I do like most of the music that's played on the radio these days, but I'm finding myself listening to more and more indie bands.. I read in the local paper the other day about indie bands making the 'real' music these days, rather than the top 40 type stuff. I agree with the columnist 99% except for the part of me that does like the mainstream music played a lot.. JMO.
