Title: Bad Review On Elliott's Songs

ladycentaur - March 20, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
I saw that and laughed at it because almost everyone (including people who aren't Elliott fans) who listened on AOL who I saw comment on the album said it was great and they really liked it...and even those who didn't like it said his vocals were great.
There will be crappy reviews...but it isn't going to hurt his sales and success.
ohioguy45780 - March 20, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
oh, well....too bad for them! LOL
seriosuly, when did a music review ever make anyone NOT buy an album?
Not me. It's all just opinion; and we all know the CD is better than half the crap out there on the market today.
itslate - March 20, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
sorry sometimes I can't help myself. :) Now really today is one TERRIFIC day.

Anybody who gives a bad review is just jealous that's all. And look at who it is giving it anyway.
We have great taste in REAL music.
This guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. It's obvious.

Wasn't it a McPhan who coined the word "Jellus"?

No one cares what the Daily News says about anything cultural, except perhaps movies.
I don't think anyone gets their opinions about music from the Daily News. I grew up in New York, trust me. I'm more worried what the New York Times will say if they review it. So far, they haven't.
goldenpenn - March 20, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
important thing is what you think!
alienhamster - March 20, 2007 04:21 PM (GMT)
Guys,
Let's remember we've been asked by the mods to keep comments directed at other Idols or their fanbases off the record. Stay positive today.
Dumb review by Farber, IMO. I was taken by how much Elliott doesn't oversing on the CD. To me it sounds like he's never been a fan, and actually liked Elliott better than he thought he would on this CD.
Jaja - March 20, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
Eh, you can't please everyone. I think it's a pretty great album for a debut artist. I personally can't wait for future albums because, as Elliott grows more experienced, he's going to record some even more fantastic songs.
jogr - March 20, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I have just bought Elliott's CD from Itunes and finally am listening to it for the first time. I'm ecstatic. It's fantastic.
About a bad review - there is always a bad review. I remember a review for AI CD. Someone wrote that Elliott does not sing but he talks. They also said that the best performance on this CD was Kevin's. The other person said that Kat is a better singer than Aretha Franklin.
We have to pay somehow for the freedom of speech no matter how annoying it is.
By the way - Did you hear the bonus tracks.? Wow.
tfecker - March 20, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
I think every artist has someone give them a bad review. I saw great reviews for McPhee yet this person said her sales are horrible. Chris got bad reviews and his cd has done great. So I am hopeful Elliott will do great too. ;-)
Soccerma - March 20, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
I never go by what the Daily News' critics have to say. Whether it's a movie or music review. I almost always disagree with them and I know for sure I am not the only one. Don't worry!! Elliott will skyrocket! :cheerleader:

In the spirit of Elliott--I'll stay postive.
Elliott never speaks unkind about anyone and doing so by us, will only result in other idol fans to reject his CD.
Yaminilita - March 20, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
They're all just opinions. The same songs one critic slams, another praises.
Benito - March 20, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
I am from Brooklyn, NY, and I did not notice the pesky "review" To think that I always have the rags, NY Daily News and the Post. Having slipped everyone's radar, it only means that the review is not worth wasting one's saliva on.
marmar1 - March 20, 2007 07:28 PM (GMT)
As I'm reading their review, I'm laughing... Elliott is climbing the charts at amazon. Just passed Chris Daughtry and is at #7.
parsimmon - March 20, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
What I've noticed is that these "bad" reviews...are really good reviews. They may criticize the songs..but, oh my, having your voice compared to Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder as in the USA Today review by Gardner...or compared to Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder as in this review...is great in my opinion
They all give Elliott's vocals highest praise.
Read this:
"Yamin's album does have one element that impresses: His vocals prove far more focused and appealing than any of his work from the show."
He hits most notes squarely, reveling in a tone that's rich, husky and winning.
Yamin has a great vibrato, making the notes sustain without milking them. At his finest, he sounds like a softer answer to Paul Rodgers, the guy from Free and Bad Company who has that white boy's Otis Redding thing down pat. There's even a bit of Stevie Wonder to his timbre."
I listen to Elliott the same way I'd listen to any beautiful instrument. Elliott delivers vocally. That's a wrap.
Janizzle - March 20, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
It's pretty much impossible to give Elliott a bad review....you can't deny he's got THE VOICE! That article ticked me off too, but clearly the writer is a fool with a gripe against AI contestants....his loss!

Just read another bad review on USA Today. The writer, who is a mediocre theater critic, hates all the songs except Free and doesn't like the arrangements either. She says it is typical American Idol junk. I won't even post the review, it made me so mad.

I'm a New Yorker. I NEVER read Jim Farber reviews. I used to not anymore he pissed me off a long time ago. Can't remember what artist it was.
I don't know where his tastes lie. Jim Farber SUCKS. :clubbed:

Theater critics? Who needs a theater critic they are worthless anyway!
Worthless as Katharine's debut, let's carry them out to the garbage heap....

He mentioned how bad she was doing in the review.

I am very prepared to read an occasional bad review...goes with the territory of putting out an album.
The brass ring is in knowing how many reviews have been so GLOWING!
That is music to my ears! I have read so many GREAT ones!
DoxieChickLuvsE - March 20, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
Actually I wrote that last post before actually READING the review. After reading it, you can't really call it all bad. He said a lot of great things aobut Elliott's voice. Sure he got craptastic aobut his songs, but coming from a reviewer who hinges on the negative, to get this below is pretty good IMO!!!
While on TV, Yamin displayed a bad case of "Idol"-itus (that sickening tendency to tart up the melody with so much frill, it overwhelms the basic sweetness of the tune), he rarely suffers from that here.
There's even a bit of Stevie Wonder to his timbre.
I can't say the above is all that negative!!!!!!
So he didn't care for the songs. HE is raving about E's voice. The songs will be subjective to each person....everyone has a different "taste" in music styles. The one thing that this reviewer cannot debate is E's voice is SUPERB on this....melodic perfectioN!
ElliottisTrueBlue - March 20, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
Okay buddy, I guess you are spared from the trash heap....
mominny - March 20, 2007 11:58 PM (GMT)
I looked at a couple of other reviews this guy wrote. It is pretty obvious to me that he is not an expert. He gave an excellent review to another former idols' CD who I will not name.
His taste is very questionable as well as his ear for good music. Not to worry...Elliotts CD is fantastic.
He is going to do great!

methinks this is from a person who has never liked american idol anyway (and we know there are plenty) and would thus be predisposed towards hating anything and everyting that is even remotely AI-related. Doxie brings up a good point. there will be good reviews and there will be bad reviews. the good ones have outnumbered the bad ones thus far, so that's a plus.
besides, critical acclaim is never an assurance of commercial success and vice versa. i know what sickens some of us sometimes, these reviews are written and published but scarcely bring up some valid points -- as if the reviewers didn't even listen to the songs but just proceeded on to write anyway, or in certain cases, have already made up their minds to hate it and then listen to it and then write about previously existent hatred. oh well. price we have to pay for everybody getting an opinion.
it's a wonderful world, ain't it?
lothlorien - March 21, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
and oh, just to bring up a point, this is the same guy who gave glowing reviews about kat mcphee, even going so far as saying that we ought to expect mcphee to be in the same top sorority as carrie underwood and kelly clarkson, and then saying later that "Katharine McPhee's self-titled debut has been performing far worse, plunging to No. 61 on Billboard's Top 200 in just six weeks, with sales of little over 240,000 copies".
point made.

Daily news is a nyc rag paper, only good for comical ny yankee headlines. It's the only reason we ever even look at it!

I know!
But man those McPhans are so MAD! They know that Elliott's CD is more critically acclaimed than hers is (most of the reviews I saw of hers were like C's) and that most likely it's gonna sell better (if not more over time) and it's on an independent label. It's obvious, why do you think there are so many threads about him in their OT section? There ain't tons about Bucky or Paris, and that is because they are not threats
